Semaglutide is a peptide similar to glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) which is a gastrointestinal peptide naturally produced in the intestine and released in response to food intake. Advertised as Ozempic and Rybelsus for adults with type 2 diabetes or as Wegovy for adults with an elevated BMI.
Semaglutide works in a few different ways which is why it is so effective. It supports the body’s insulin secretion to bring glucose into the cells, it inhibits glucagon (glucose made by the liver) secretion and it slows the rate of gastric emptying so you are full longer. It also appears to enhance pancreatic cell growth, which helps insulin production.
Semaglutide prevents blood sugar spikes and allows our bodies to process the foods we eat, decreasing appetite and overall calorie consumption throughout the day because we feel full longer. It also has effects on brain hormones, leptin and CCK, which signal the brain to stop food intake.
Individuals have demonstrated rapid changes in body weight and improved blood sugar with little lifestyle modification. However, when combined with a healthy diet and exercise, the fat melts right off!

Individuals typically report little to no side effects because we are able to start at a very low dose and work our way up. The most common side effects are often temporary and may include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, constipation, dizziness, or tiredness.
We do not want you to have nausea or stomach discomfort and it is not necessary for the medication to work. We slowly increase your dose so that we do not have these uncomfortable symptoms. As you adjust to the medication we slowly increase your dose when you are ready.

GLP-1 agonists, like semaglutide, work in a few different ways but on many different tissues in the body. They inhibit food intake, gastric emptying, and glucagon secretion and stimulate insulin secretion.
Neurotransmitters and brain hormones, like leptin and CCK, are also targeted, resulting in decreased appetite and improved satiation (fullness) and your brain signaling you to stop eating. Digestion of food in the GI tract is slowed but also the breakdown and metabolism of carbohydrates is improved.
